A vehement clash broke out on Wednesday between the leftist government and the conservative opposition over comments by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, captured on camera during a private conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, about "extreme-right populists" in protests against the Prespes deal. 

Anastasiades congratulates Tsipras on ratification of Prespes deal

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has congratulated Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on the ratification of the Prespes accord with Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) which will change the small Balkan state's name to Republic of North Macedonia, ending a 28-year-old row between Athens and Skopje.

Tsipras, Anastasiades meeting in Nicosia

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is set to meet with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades at the Presidential Mansion in Nicosia at 9.30 a.m. Wednesday.

Tsipras arrived Tuesday in Nicosia to attend the fifth Southern EU Countries Summit.

The gathering of leaders from France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Greece and Malta focused on migration and other regional issues.

Multi-party military force for energy security

Cyprus, Greece and Israel have decided to set up a multi-party military force to provide security for natural gas infrastructure, Cypriot state television CyBC reported on Friday.

It said that the multi-party force decision was among unreported issues discussed at a summit of the three countries in Israel on Thursday.

US ambassador to Israel pledges support for Mediterranean pipeline

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday said that Israel, Greece and Cyprus will sign an agreement early next year to build a pipeline to carry natural gas from the eastern Mediterranean to Europe, while the United States pledged its support for the ambitious project.
