The Hellenic Police (ELAS) has arrested dozens of people for violating measures introduced by the government in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus, apprehending a total of 127 people across the country since last Thursday. 

Two villages in western Macedonia were quarantined on Monday where authorities have recorded in the past few days three deaths from the new coronavirus and more than 10 infections, according to the General Secretariat of Civil Protection.

The villages, Damaskinia and Dragasia, are located between the towns of Kozani and Kastoria.

Seven residents of Lesvos have been indicted to appear before a prosecutor at the island's main port of Mytilene in connection with an attack on two volunteer workers for the Swiss "One Happy Family" whose recreation facilities for migrants on the island were destroyed last week in a fire whose cause is still being investigated.

The migrants trying to breach Greece's land border may have failed, but, with the help of improving weather, arrivals on the islands are accelerating.

Sources have told Kathimerini that, from 7 to 11 a.m. Sunday, more than 400 migrants have arrived on the islands of Lesvos, Chios and Samos.

Greek island residents went on strike for a second day on Thursday, stepping up protests against government plans for new migrant camps on five islands after violent clashes with police.

After extensive clashes between officers and islanders that left 62 people injured on the eastern Aegean islands of Lesvos and Chios, the government announced on Wednesday that it is withdrawing most of the riot police units that were stationed there to counter fierce reaction to the creation of new, closed migrant camps.

Despite vehement local opposition to the construction of new closed centers on the Aegean islands and Tuesday's clashes between residents and riot police, the government insists it does not intend to back down from its decision to go ahead with the plan.

Local authorities and residents on the Aegean islands of Lesvos and Chios are preparing for a full-scale conflict to prevent the start of construction work over the next few days on new closed structures for migrants.

Protest groups said they are guarding the sites where the government intends to build the centers.
