The migrant-smuggling business in Western Balkan countries is worth at least 50 million euros a year, the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime NGO said in a report published on Monday.

Drug trafficking is the chief source of 'dirty money' penetrating Albania's meagre economy, according to authorities, helping to finance political corruption, sway elections and win protection from prosecution.

A truck driver was arrested on Monday in Lykovrisi, northern Athens on charges of transporting and smuggling drugs into Greece after amounts of cocaine and hashish were found in his vehicle.

According to the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the suspect, a foreign national, said he was a truck driver transporting products between European countries.

Four people have been arrested for drug trafficking in Plovdiv. This was announced at a briefing of the Regional Prosecutor's Office in the city, Nova TV reported. Thanks to the police operation a drug smuggling network from Western Europe to Turkey was broken up: 115 kg of ecstasy worth BGN 3.5 million have been seized and 4 kg of marijuana prepared for export to Turkey.

Customs officers found more than 58 kg of cocaine during a specialized operation at the port of Varna-West.

Norwegian NGO Aegean Boat Report has vehemently denied accusations levelled against it by Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis of assisting migrant smugglers in the Aegean.
