The Varna Court of Appeal has upheld a life sentence for the horrific murder of Silvia S., a woman from the Shumen village of Chernoglavtsi, marking a tragic end to a story of domestic violence that gripped the nation.

Gone are the days when the jeering of public figures found apologists who justified insults or even violence as an expression of righteous indignation. 

Those who articulate their views publicly, whether from a political platform or from the pulpit, should observe moderation. Intolerant speech can also lead to corresponding actions - such as slapping. 

Talks on violence, bullying and daily life at school

An online platform established to address violence and bullying in Greek schools has already received 41 complaints since its launch less than one week ago, Education Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis said on Monday.

Scratches, slaps and bruises on arms and legs do not legally fall into the category of domestic abuse unless they are the result of ongoing behavior, according to the police's current manual on domestic violence.

The recent murder of a 28-year-old woman by her abusive ex-partner outside an Athens police station appears to have encouraged other women to come forward and to have prompted a more assertive response from the authorities.

School bullying and, more broadly, adolescent violence are social problems that cannot be solved by administrative decisions alone. 

However, the state's mobilization is necessary to begin to systematically record and methodically deal with the problem. The measures announced by the government are a good start.

Seeking to tackle the rise in cases of bullying, the government has announced a series of preventive measures which include, among others, stricter penalties for students for acts of violence at school and parents' co-responsibility for their children's actions.
