Prejmer gets ready for Fasching, the Saxon Pancake Carnival, now at 11th edition

The commune of Prejmer, located 17 km from the Brasov County seat, gets party-ready as more than 20,000 pancakes of 27 sorts, with various jam, jelly or cheese fillings kept under well-guarded secrecy by the local diligent housewives, will be prepared hot on the spot, in front of the participants in the eleventh edition of Fasching - the Pancake Carnival that will take place here on Sunday as of 10:00 hours.

"We expect it to be a highly successful edition, because the preparations began as early as last year, right after the wrap-up of the tenth edition. It sets the whole community moving, and the young are naturally the deepest involved. 70 young people riding on five floats will prepare by rotation an estimated 20,000 pancakes," Prejmer mayor Serban Todorica Constantin told a recent press conference.
According to the mayor, many customs of the Saxons who used to live in Prejmer, the pancake festival included, were preserved to this day. "This is a tradition of the Saxons we used to live along with in a tight-knit community, and we want young people of today and the kids of the commune to carry it on. We will rejoice together tasting the delicious pancakes, as well as other traditional Saxon dishes and home-made preparations," the mayor said.

The event starts with the Pancake Caravan, when youth will be offering on the streets of the township pancakes baked on stoves placed on horse-drawn carts. As of noon, the Prejmer Citadel Hall will host a pancake exhibition. Concerts and performances given by the 'Barsa Country' brass band, the children of the Prejmer secondary school, the German ensemble "Korona", the 'C&B' troupe or 'Band 6' will keep the viewers entertained, and singer...
