INSCOP study: Comaneci, Halep, Hagi topping the rankings of Romanian sports personalities

Retired gymnast Nadia Comaneci, active tennis player Simona Halep and retired association football player Gheorghe Hagi are topping the rankings of Romanian sport personalities, while association football and tennis are the favourite sports of Romanians, according to the findings of an INSCOP study released on Tuesday.

According to the poll, Nadia Comaneci is the most popular Romanian sports personality for whom 95.5 per cent of the respondents have a very high (73.6 per cent) and high regard. Next comes Simona Halep, who garners the regards of 93.8 per cent of the respondents (70.3 per cent of whom have a very high regard for her her), and third comes Gheorghe Hagi, with 90.8 per cent high and very high regards (63 per cent of the respondents said they have a very high regard for him). For retired tennis player Ilie Nastase, 82.4 per cent of the respondents have a high and very high regard, while 79.7 percent have a high or very high regard for association football coach Mircea Lucescu and 71.9 percent have a high or very high regard for association football coach Anghel Iordanescu.

Asked about what sports they or their children would like to play, 29.1 per cent of the respondents chose association football; 15.9 per cent tennis; 12.6 per cent other sports (gymnastics, swimming, volleyball), and 9.2 per cent handball. As many as 9.2 per cent of Romanians said they would not chose to play any sports, while 7.7 per cent of them voiced a preference for track and field events, 6.1 per cent for cycling and 5.7 per cent for basketball. The percentage of non-answers was 4.5 per cent.
