Weightlifter Onica wins two gold medals (clean and jerk, total) in men's 94-kg category

Weightlifter Nicolae Onica won on Saturday evening two gold medals in the men's 94 kg category (clean and jerk, total) at the European Weightlifting Championships that is taking place these days in Izvorani.

The athlete, who is registered with the CS Dinamo, secured a gold medal in the clean and jerk event from his first attempt - 204 kg. He failed to clean and jerk 210 kg, but managed to lift the same weight at his third attempt. Onica also won the silver medal in the snatch event.

The silver medal was won by Lithuania's Stanulis Zygimantas - 202 kg and the bronze medal was won by Latvia's Kozevnikovs Vadims -198 kg.

Nicolae Onica was first also at total, winning the gold (381 kg), he was followed by Stanulis Zygimantas (374 kg) who won the silver medal, while the bronze medal was secured by Lukasz Grela (357 kg).

Romania's medal tally in Izvorani has thus risen to 23. So far, in the women's 48-kg category, Elena Andries won three gold medals (snatch, clean and jerk, total), in men's 56-kg category, Ilie Ciotoiu won two bronze medals (clean and jerk, total), Ionut Ilie secured two bronze medals in 62-kg category (clean and jerk, total), Andreei Penciu won a silver medal (snatch) and a bronze medal (total) in the 58-kg category, Maria Grigoriu got one bronze (clean and jerk) in the women's 58-kg category, Paul Dumitrascu got a silver medal in men's 69-kg category (clean and jerk), Loredana Toma won three golds (snatch, clean and jerk, total) in the women's 63-kg category, Irina Lepsa got silver in the women's 63-kg category (snatch, clean and jerk), Razvan Martin one gold (snatch) and two silver medals (clean and jerk, total) in the men's 77-kg category, while Nicolae Onica got two gold medals (clean and jerk, total) and one silver (snatch) in the men's 94-kg category.

The European Senior Weightlifting Championships are held March 26-April 1 at the Polyvalent Hall of the Izvorani Olympic Complex.
