Pragersko rail hub upgrade begins

Pragersko – Works have started on a project to upgrade the Pragersko railway hub, one of the main rail junctions in the country. The EUR 90 million project is slated for completion in June 2023.

The overhaul aims to bring it in line with EU technical standards, increase speed on the Maribor-Celje route, and improve transport safety.

Works include the expansion of the existing railway station building, removal of a level crossing, construction of two parking lots, erection of two kilometres of sound barriers, replacement of 18 kilometres of track and modernisation of the signalling equipment.

Addressing the official groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, Infrastructure Minister Jernej Vrtovec said the project was important not just for the local community but for the entire country.

He said the plan was to make rail infrastructure “modern, economic, efficient and fast” to boost both passenger and cargo transport. “This is a contribution to sustainable mobility and to the Slovenian economy.”

The project has received EUR 40 million in funding from the European Regional Development Fund.
