Constantine Mitsotakis, a former conservative prime minister remembered for fierce confrontations with Greece's liberal and socialist parties as well as early free-market reforms during a 60-year political career, died early Monday. He was 98.

Greek politicians reacted on Monday to the death of Constantine Mitsotakis, former prime minister and president of New Democracy, by offering condolences and expressing their feelings about his legacy and demise.

"A great [man] has gone. Greece would be a better country today if it had paid more attention to him," New Democracy vice president Adonis Georgiadis tweeted.

His family issued a simple statement:

“Konstantinos Mitsotakis passed away at one o’ clock after midnight, surrounded by the people he loved and loved him”.
