In the grip of a heat wave

Tourists cover their faces for protection from the scorching sun at the entrance to the Acropolis site in Athens on Monday. Temperatures in Athens reached 39 Celsius. This latest heat wave is forecast to last until the week's end, with temperatures rising above 40 degrees in some parts of the country. The City of Athens has opened six air-conditioned venues where the public can cool off.

Ex NATO chief: "Russia should pay a higher price"

A former NATO chief thinks the EU should reconcile itself with new US sanctions against Russia and accept them in the name of the Trans-Atlantic partnership.

According to Anders Fogh Rasmussen's op-ed published by the Financial Times, quoted by Sputnik, Russia's goal is to divide the West and win in the new Cold War.

Tsipras and Macron exchange thoughts at Brussels summit

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras (c) speaks Thursday with French President Emmanuel Macron at a European Council meeting in Brussels where talks were to focus on terrorism, illegal migration and economic growth. According to sources, Macron told Tsipras that he hoped to visit Greece soon and expressed satisfaction with last week's Eurogroup deal.

Garbage piles up in streets of Athens

A woman walks past piles of garbage that have accumulated on sidewalks in the capital due to a shortage of municipal sanitation workers. About 6,500 municipal employees on short-term contracts working in the sanitation sector fear losing their jobs following a ruling by the Court of Auditors banning the extension of temporary contracts.

Greek village evacuated after mine collapses

A destroyed road near the lignite coal mine area, where a huge landslide occurred near Amyntaio, Monday. Big masses of soil moved about 40 meters, causing dozens of residents of nearby village Agioi Anargyroi to evacuate their homes. A large portion of the mine collapsed and four excavators were crushed under tons of soil.
