Seven PPC executives acquitted on appeal over 2017 lignite mine collapse

An appeals court in Western Macedonia on Thursday reversed a sentence imposed on seven former and current executives of state-run power utility PPC over a huge landslide at a lignite mine in the region of Kozani in 2017, which forced the evacuation of a nearby village.

Russia says awaits US response to prisoner swap proposals

Russia said Wednesday it was waiting for the United States to respond to its propositions regarding a prisoner swap, days before U.S. reporter Evan Gershkovich was set to face trial in Russia.

Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, was arrested in March 2023 on espionage charges rejected by his family, employer and the White House as false.

Police nab relative of ISIL’s ex-leader in Kırşehir

Turkish counter-terrorism units have apprehended a relative of former ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in the central province of Kırşehir.

The security forces initiated the operation, acting on intelligence that a relative of al-Baghdadi, who has been engaged in terrorist activities on behalf of the organization, was in Kırşehir.

Crowd assaults alleged killer of 11-year-old outside Pyrgos court

Dozens of people who had gathered on Tuesday outside the court house in the town of Pyrgos, in southwestern Greece, attacked a man accused of killing an 11-year-old girl. 

As the police car carrying the 37-year-old suspect approached the court house, a crowd stormed towards the car and scuffled with the police officers, who tried to repel them. Eventually, the police car drove off.
