Turkey's religious head calls new Islamic 'caliphate' illegitimate

The declaration of a “caliphate” by Islamist militants in Iraq lacks legitimacy and their death threats to Christians are a danger to civilization, the head of Turkey’s religious authority has said.

The Islamic State, an armed group that has captured territory across Iraq, declared its leader, Ibrahim al-Baghdadi, “caliph” last month. 

Women-only beach to be opened in top Turkish tourism center

The Mediterranean province of Antalya, known as one of Turkey’s top tourism centers, will soon have a women-only beach, Antalya Mayor Menderes Türel has announced.

The Sarısu beach will be turned into a free of charge, women-only beach before the Islamic holy month of Ramadan ends on July 27, Türel said during a fast-breaking iftar meal at a municipal nursing home on July 16.

Candidate İhsanoğlu calls for peaceful solution to Kurdish issue under unitary state

Turkey should solve the Kurdish issue in peaceful terms, said Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu, joint candidate of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), calling for the continuation of the unitary state.

“We have to solve this in peace. We have paid a big price for this,” he said during an interview on broadcaster Halk TV.

In his first campaign rally, Turkish PM Erdoğan vows to be an active president

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has vowed to remain active if he is elected president.

"I'm not leaving you. I'm not pausing to serve. I'm not going to rest. In contrary, I'm nominated to a higher post to serve you, my country and my nation, better," Erdoğan said during his first presidential campaign rally in the Black Sea city of Samsun on July 5. 

Turkey's two main opposition parties' presidential candidate launches official campaign

Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu, the joint presidential candidate of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), started his official campaign June 30 by visiting Anıtkabir, where the Turkish Republic’s founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is buried.
