Turkey Tormented by Raging Wildfires

A number of wildfires are still blazing in Turkey but more than 100 have been brought under control, according to officials Sunday.

The Minister of Forestry and Agriculture, Bekir Pakdemirli, tweeted that five fires were continuing in the tourist destinations of Antalya and Mugla but that 107 others had now been subdued.

Excavation head calls Myra ‘Pompeii’ of Anatolia

The 13th season excavations have started in Myra-Andriake, one of the six most important cities of the Lycian League located in the Demre district of the southern province of Antalya.

Professor Nevzat Çevik, the head of the excavations, stated that the Myra-Andriake excavations would continue all year round with the decision of the Culture and Tourism Ministry.

Massive forest fire engulfs Mediterranean district

A massive fire erupted in two different locations in the southern province of Antalya's Manavgat district has destroyed dozens of hectares of forest cover and caused the evacuation of five settlements.

The cause of the fires in the Yeniköy and Side neighborhoods of the district is still unknown.

Some 307,000 Russian tourists flock to Antalya in 2 weeks

Over the last two weeks, the Mediterranean resort city of Antalya, the pearl of the Turkish Riviera, welcomed over 307,000 Russian tourists, according to official data.

A total of 1,095 airplanes from Russia landed at Antalya Airport in the last two weeks, said Provincial Culture and Tourism Directorate data released Monday.
