Firefighters were striving to bring under control a large forest fire that broke out in the mountainous area of Perissia on Corfu on Monday afternoon.

A large firefighting contingent was dispatched to the scene, according to the head of the fire service for the Ionian islands, Efthymis Georgakopoulos who said two water-dropping aircraft have also been deployed.

New fires rage in central Portugal. More than 2,300 firefighters with specialized equipment are struggling with to stop the fires from spreading, the France Press reported.

A big fire has covered the area of Kunchelu Branku. 800 firefighters, assisted by the local population, are involved in the extinguishing of the fire.

Firefighters have successfully managed to free citizens and employees trapped in a tax department building in the district of Exarchia in dowtown Athens, after a fire broke out shortly before 11.30 am.

Firefighters on Thursday managed to bring under partial control a blaze that broke out in a building in Exarchia where tax authority records are stored.

A 71-year-old man was found dead in his home in Pieria, northern Greece, Wednesday after firefighters put out a blaze on the property.

Firefighters were called in after a neighbor reported smoke coming out of the ground floor of the victim's house. The fire was likely caused by a short circut.

A fire broke out early on Wednesday in the Avala Kartonka cardboard factory, located in the Ada Huja neighborhood, on the right bank of the Danube in Belgrade.

Six firefighters have been hurt - three have burns, while others have inhaled smoke - as well as two workers at the factory.

A fire has broken out in a high-rise building under reconstruction on a major street in central Moscow, The Emergencies Ministry reports. The fire started on the seventh floor of the building and has reportedly engulfed about 200 square meters, according to Russia Today.
