Long-neglected Gaza heritage wilts in war

The Israeli missile tore through the vaulted ceiling and pulverised age-old sandstone. One direct hit destroyed the Omari mosque in Jabaliya and dealt another blow to Gaza's beleaguered heritage.

The site is believed to have housed a mosque since the seventh century and parts of the Omari were said to date back to the 14th century.

Palestinian factions agree to new 72-hour Gaza ceasefire

Palestinian factions agreed on Aug. 10 to a new 72-hour Gaza ceasefire, Egyptian state television reported, quoting a Palestinian source.

Egypt is trying to keep indirect Israeli-Palestinian talks alive after a three-day truce expired on Aug. 8 and fighting resumed. There was no immediate announcement from Israel.

Israeli strike kills Gaza child as conflict resumes

Israeli warplanes struck targets across Gaza, killing a child on Aug. 8 in retaliation to rocket fire after a 72-hour truce expired without a breakthrough on a longer-term ceasefire.

Palestinian militants started the rocket salvos ahead of the truce expiry at 0500 GMT, and Gazans again fled homes in fear before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of a forceful response.

Israel and Hamas have both lost

The Egyptian brokered cease-fire in Gaza may or may not hold, but this is an opportunity to assess who won what as a result of this carnage. Militarily speaking, “it is already clear that there have been no winners” according to the BBC’s defense correspondent Jonathan Marcus.
