Epidemiologist Fafangel Delo’s person of the year

Ljubljana – Mario Fafangel, the head of the Centre for Communicable Diseases at the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ), was declared the Person of the Year 2020 by the newspaper publisher Delo at an online event on Thursday evening. He was labelled the leading epidemiologist “showing us the way in the restless sea of the epidemic”.

Dnevnik points to flaws in Kočevje-Ljubljana passenger rail service

Ljubljana – The joy over the resumption of passenger rail service between Kočevje and Ljubljana after fifty years died away quickly after passengers looked at the timetable. Despite the EUR 100 million renovation of the track, the timetable is tailored only to working migrants, newspaper Dnevnik says on Tuesday.

Stage scaffolding New Year tree warns about troubles in event industry

Ljubljana – Representatives of the Slovenian event industry are erecting a New Year tree in Ljubljana’s Congress Square made from stage scaffolding and lights in order to warn about the sector having ground to an almost complete halt in 2020 due to the coronavirus crisis, and about the financial troubles of its employees.

Health Ministry postpones start of trial mass testing by a day

Ljubljana- The Health Ministry has decided to postpone the start of voluntary trial mass testing from Monday to Tuesday. Expert consultations are taking place, including about additional sites, the ministry told the STA on Sunday. Details are to be presented on Monday.

The four-day trial testing was to start tomorrow morning in Congress Square in Ljubljana.

Govt extends epidemic, reopens libraries and museums in some regions

Ljubljana – The government has formally extended the epidemic by another 30 days beginning with 18 December, government Covid-19 spokesman Jelko Kacin said on Wednesday evening. Museums, libraries and galleries have been given the go-ahead to reopen in regions with the best epidemiological status.

Ljubljana adopts new strategy for post-Covid tourism

Ljubljana – The Ljubljana City Council has adopted a new strategy for the development of tourism in 2021-2027. The main goals include increasing off-peak season visits and average spending, and extending the average stay. The strategy acknowledges the post-coronavirus tourism recovery will take time.
