On the other side of the Aegean, Turkey is going through a period of intense instability and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is becoming increasingly unpredictable.

Constitution change is priority, Erdoğan says at Turkish parliament opening

The new legislative year of the Turkish parliament began on Oct. 1 under the leadership of Parliament Speaker İsmail Kahraman with a ceremony where President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said a constitution change should be a priority for the lawmakers.

"First we should materialize a constitution change," he said.

"I think that the recent steps are important."

Turkey finalizes military training base in Somalia

Turkey has finished its first military base in Somalia and will help train the country's army to fight the deadly al-Shabaab terror group, a senior Turkish source told Anadolu Agency on Oct. 1.

A Turkish military attache speaking on condition of anonymity said the U.N.-backed base will be operational by the start of 2017.

Athens says Erdogan remarks on Lausanne Treaty are ‘dangerous’

Statements disputing the Lausanne Treaty were dangerous for relations between Greece and Turkey, as well as the surrounding region, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras stated on Friday afternoon. The prime minister was responding to comments made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding the 1923 Lausanne Treaty on Thursday.

Parliament opens with coup attempt on agenda

The new legislative year of the Turkish parliament is set to kick off on Oct. 1, as debate on decree laws issued under the state of emergency are expected to dominate the agenda. 
The Turkish parliament, which has been on summer recess since Aug. 20, will convene at 3 p.m. under the leadership of Parliament Speaker İsmail Kahraman.
