PM Ponta: Swipes at any potential European Commissioner are irresponsible

AGERPRES special correspondent Daniel Florea reports: Prime Minister Victor Ponta said on Tuesday that until European Commission President-designate Jean Claude Juncker decides what Commissioner portfolio Romania gets and who this specific person will be, he will make no comment on the subject, and termed swipes at any potential Commissioner of Romania as "irresponsible and even vile."

"Until the time President-designate Mr. Juncker decides what portfolio to assign to Romania and, further on, who the preferred person is, I won't make any statements. I find the statements made in Romania, such swipe-taking at any potential European Commissioner, are extremely irresponsible and even vile. Let me tell you that in 27 [EU states] the entire political class is making efforts for landing an as good as possible portfolio. In Romania, in the classical tradition of the past 10 years, the first concern is to attack the would-be European Commissioner. In a manner that is highly reprehensible in my view, this also happened when Mr. Vosganian was about to secure an important portfolio. He was literally lynched in Romania by all sorts of villains and we ended up with a — let's say — second-rate portfolio, like the one held by Mr. Orban.
