Football star Milan Galic passes away

BELGRADE - Milan Galic, Serbian and Yugoslav football legend, has died suddenly at the age of 76 in Belgrade.

Galic, who passed away on Saturday, began his brilliant football career at FK Proleter in Zrenjanin. He made himself a big name during his years with FK Partizan from Belgrade.

Between 1959 and 1966, he played 281 matches, scored 165 goals and won four national champion titles with Partizan.

He was on the Partizan team that played the 1966 European Cup final.

In the period from 1966 to 1970, he played for Belgia's Standard Liege, winning two national champions titles and a Belgian Cup with the team. He played for French Stade Reims from 1970 to 1973.

The crowd favorite ‘Gale', as Galic was nicknamed, played 51 matches and scored 37 goals for the Yugoslav national team, which made him the second best scorer in the national team's history.

He was part of the Yugoslav national team that ended in the second place at the European Championship 1960 in Paris, and he won the gold medal with the team at the Olympics in Rome the same year.

He was also a member of the team that ended up in fourth place at the 1962 world championship in Chile.

After ending his career as football player, he graduated from the Faculty of Law in Belgrade and worked with the national football association as legal advisor.
