Largest privately-owned winery in Balkans opens

PROKUPLJE - Toplicki vinogradi, the largest privately-owned winery in the Balkans, has opened in the Gojinovac village near Prokuplje, southern Serbia.

Sprawling on around 8,000 sq. metres, the winery has 80 hectares of vineyards - an investment worth nearly EUR 6 million.

The owner of the winery is Milomir Kovacevic, who has been living in Spain for 25 years, Toplicki vinogradi brand manager Maja Cirkovic told Tanjug.

The winery also produces the Epigenija wine, named by the famous Serbian botanist Jovan Cvijic in the 19th century.

The name comes from an extraordinary phenomenon - in this area, the Toplica River makes an about-turn and flows upstream. The phenomenon, which is called epigeny, is unique in Europe and very rare on a global scale.
