Areti Tsochatzopoulou to be released from prison
Areti Tsochatzopoulou, daughter of former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, was expected to be released from prison following a decision by a parole board prosecutor on Tuesday.
Tsochatzopoulou has been behind bars for the last two and a half years after being sentenced to 12 years in prison for her role in laundering millions of euros in kickbacks received by her father during his tenure as defense minister.
The prosecutor had proposed that Tsochatzopoulou be released on humanitarian grounds after she produced documents supporting her position that one of her three children, who suffers from health problems, needed to undergo surgery. She was ordered not to leave the country and appear at a police precinct at regular intervals.
Meanwhile, the court rejected a fourth appeal for early release by Vicky Stamati, Tsochatzopouloss wife, who is also serving a 12-year prison sentence in the same case.
The former minister was sentenced to 20 years in prison in October 2013.
