Social Democratic MEPs to Hungary's Viktor Orban: Due reaction to threats is solidarity, not denial of EU principles

The delegation of the Social Democratic MEPs expresses disapproval at the message Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban conveyed late on Sunday, according to whom "economic immigration only brings trouble and threats to European people," which is why "immigration must be stopped."

"Vilifying migration is a mistake, even more so in times like this, when the European Union needs solidarity and a firm defence of its fundamental principles. We believe that migration among member states contributes to strengthening the European Union's cohesion and can also help to gradually accomplish one of the Union's goals ? reducing discrepancies and polarization within this community," reads a release sent on Tuesday to AGERPRES.

According to the PSD MEPs, although the legislation obviously needs improvement and member states should also better cooperate on this phenomenon, migration to the European Union is at the same time a reality with profound positive valences, but also a yardstick of the success of the European project.

"At a time when we are all stunned by the events that occurred in Paris, we need to think and act together in the spirit of the principles that unite us. Solidarity should be our reaction to threats, not the denial of EU principles!" the Social Democratic MEPs argue. AGERPRES
