The 25th Ljubljana Marathon to be held on Sunday

Ljubljana – The 25th Volkswagen Ljubljana Marathon will take place in the Slovenian capital on Sunday, after it was cancelled due to the pandemic last year. This year’s edition was slightly altered as well – all the races will be taking place on the same day, with runners testing their abilities on courses of 10 km, 21 km and 42 km.

Up until the Ljubljana Marathon presentation event on Tuesday, 5,000 runners had signed up, with almost a third coming from foreign countries, said the organisers.

Participants can still register for the marathon on Friday and Saturday between 9am and 7pm at the Republic Square. A valid Covid pass is mandatory for registration, they added.

“The return of the Ljubljana Marathon after a year off is great news. Due to the pandemic, the traditional run along the wire was cancelled in the spring, so we are pinning all our hopes on the marathon on Sunday,” Ljubljana Deputy Mayor Aleš Čerin said on Tuesday.

The chairman of the organising committee Danilo Ferjančič said that they have opted for a downsized version of the marathon this year, with running events taking place only on Sunday and the 42 km marathon spanning over two shortened laps instead of one.

“The Republic Square and the Congress Square will remain the main event venues,” added Ferjančič. Unlike previous years before Covid, there were no races for schoolchildren on the streets of Ljubljana in the days leading up to the main marathon on Sunday.

However, they did organise the “Pink Marathon”, lasting throughout the month of October. With participating through the Strava app, runners are able to make a donation to the independent non-profit breast cancer awareness organisation Europa Donna.

An open fair will also be held in the Republic Square from Friday to Sunday with different activities for runners, athletes, fans, families and curious passers-by, said the organisers.
