Golob says govt determined to help Prekmurje develop

Ljubljana – It is high time that after years of talk, Prekmurje region was helped make a development breakthrough, Prime Minister Robert Golob said in a message he wrote on the Day of Unification of Prekmurje Slovenians with the Homeland, which is celebrated on 17 August.

“We often hear that Prekmurje is a region of growth and opportunity. After years of searching for solutions for a development breakthrough, it is time to be more concrete and sincere in our desire to recognise and support innovation, know-how and the desire for new, sustainable approaches that are being conceived in the region.”

The government is determined to meet these ambitions in order to provide a better living environment for the inhabitants of this north-easternmost region, Golob stressed.

He said that the day when the reunification of Slovenians in Prekmurje with the rest of the Slovenian nation is remembered is “a holiday of all of us”, labelling the reunification as a basis for a new chapter for Prekmurje in terms of politics, culture and business.

“At the same time, the time when Europe was healing the wounds of the devastating WWI offered space for more lasting and just solutions on the ever-complex European map. We did not let the Paris Peace Conference deprive us of the opportunity to live together with our Prekmurje compatriots in a united, single country for good.”

Golob said much of the credit for this goes to several great patriots, such as Matija Slavič, Jožef Klekl, Ivan Jerič in Miloš Küzmič, whose persuasive, fact-based activism and their diplomatic skills “contributed to the realisation of the long-unfulfilled aspirations of past generations”.

The reunification provided a much-needed boost to the strengthening of the autochthonous culture, linguistic identity and national consciousness in Prekmurje, said Golob, who sees Prekmurje as being “synonymous with a thriving multicultural and multi-religious area” when the country is increasingly connected to a trans-European community.

The Prekmurje day has been celebrated since 2006 in memory of the day in 1919 when the region was united with the rest of the Slovenian nation following a number of centuries under Hungarian rule. This year’s main ceremony was held last evening in the town of Črenšovci and addressed by President Borut Pahor.
