‘Panic button’ app to help women facing domestic violence

A digital application for cellphones to support women facing violence at home, called "Panic Button," was introduced in Athens and Thessaloniki on March 23.

The free app is downloaded on a smartphone and activates the service by pressing on a button which sends a text message (sms) to the operational center of the police. The app contains the needed information to locate the user.

Bulgarian Police found a Painting by Jackson Pollock that could be worth 50 Million Euros

A painting by the world-famous artist Jackson Pollock was discovered in Bulgaria during an operation by the Main Directorate "Fighting Organized Crime" and the Greek anti-organized crime services under the coordination of Europol. Clashes in Greece as thousands protest train tragedy

Greek police fired tear gas and protesters hurled firebombs on Thursday as more than 40,000 people took to the streets to slam the government and voice outrage at last month's train disaster that killed 57 people.

The protests were accompanied by a 24-hour strike -- the biggest yet since the disaster -- this time called by Greece's leading private as well as public sector unions.

4 police officers arrested for torturing detainee

Four police officers were arrested Saturday for allegedly beating and torturing a detainee.

The arrests were made by Greek police's Internal Affairs Division. The arrested, a higher officer, two lower-ranking policemen and a member of the Special Guard unit were responsible for guarding and transferring detainees.

Lawmaker Varoufakis attacked in Exarchia, has nose broken

A group of people attacked MP and former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis at a restaurant in the Athens neighborhood of Exarchia, breaking his nose.

The group spotted Varoufakis at the restaurant on Valtetsiou St., or was informed of his presence, and confronted him; one or more of the group eventually hit Varoufakis in the face.

Police smash gang that smuggled migrants into Greece in trucks

Greek police said on Friday they have smashed a criminal gang that smuggled migrants packed into trucks across the border with Turkey for up to 4,000 euros each.

Police have so far arrested seven suspects on charges of forming a criminal investigation, while at least 20 more have been identified.

Gang arrested after carrying out at least 72 sneak burglaries

A gang suspected of burgling at least 72 homes in different parts of the Greek capital since last February has been broken up by the Greek police with the arrest of 15 suspects, the force said in an announcement on Tuesday.

According to investigators, the gang is believed to have made off with cash and valuables worth an estimated 1 million euros in the past year.
