EU officials visit Greek-Turkish border amid migrant surge

The presidents of the executive European Commission, the European Council (which represents national governments) and the European Parliament - Ursula von der Leyen, Charles Michel and David Sassoli - have arrived in northern Greece for a planned tour at the country's land border with Turkey.
The EU officials were met at the airport by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The European Commission is seeking an urgent meeting

European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas, Europe's top official on migration, today called on Croatia to convene an emergency meeting.
Schinas wrote on Twitter that he had contacted Croatian Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic on this occasion to request an emergency meeting of the interior ministers.

A migrant shot and seriously wounded by Croatian police may have been struck by accident, Croatian Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic said late on Sunday, responding to the latest incident that has raised questions about the tactics used by the European Union member against migrants and refugees trying to cross its territory.

Croatia Veterans Threaten To Block Roads Over Asylum Centre

War Veterans in Croatia have warned they will set up road blocks if the government revives plans to locate a centre for asylum seekers in the small rural town of Petrina, about 60 kilometres southeast of Zagreb.

"We do not give up on our requests … If you do not meet them, we'll see you on the state roads on May 26, 2019," the War Veterans of Petrinja wrote on Thursday.

Report Accuses Croatian Police of Abusing Migrants

A Human Rights Watch report published on Tuesday alleged that Croatian border police have been threatening, beating, insulting and extorting money and valuables from migrants and refugees, and pushing them back into Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Croatia has denied the allegations against the police, according to the report.
