Ships open to the public

As part of events being held around the country to mark the March 25 national holiday commemorating the start of the War of Greek Independence in 1821, two Greek ships have docked at the port of Piraeus and are open for visits by the public over the weekend.

The Hellenic Navy's Themistoklis, a frigate, and Karathanasis, a gunboat, will be docked at Gate E12 (Akti Themistokleous).

US President Joe Biden noted that the Greek-US alliance has never been stronger in the annual proclamation of March 25th as Greek Independence Day. He said his country's founders had been inspired by ancient Athenian Democracy and extolled the contributions of Greek-Americans to the US economy, noting his own longstanding ties to the Greek-American community.

Immortalized in Victoria Hislop's award-winning novel, "The Island," the uninhabited islet of Spinalonga has a long and tragic past. Known by its grim epithet, the "island of the living dead," and nestled in the picturesque Elounda Bay of northeast Crete, the islet was home to one of Europe's last leper colonies, active from 1903 to 1957.

Revolutionary Heroes | Nafplio & Athens | To January 10 & 31

The National Gallery has put together a special, two-part exhibition dedicated to the heroes of the Greek War of Independence. The first part, in its main building in Athens and running until the end of the month, comprises 20 engravings by Zacharias Arvanitis, representing an equal number of large-scale portraits of key figures of the revolution.
