New, tougher measures for drunk and drugged drivers, as well as those who drive at excessive speed, are already in place in Bulgaria. The changes concern the number of points that are deducted from drivers for violations.

Bulgaria has the most dangerous roads for driving heavy goods vehicles in Europe, according to a study by a British technology and logistics company.

International drivers complain about broken roads, kilometers-long queues at borders, lack of rest areas and systematic violation of traffic rules, which often lead to accidents with fatal consequences.

Twenty-two people lost their lives and 578 were injured (13 seriously) in 517 road accidents involving cars, motorcycles and pedestrians in January in Attica, according to the Attica Traffic Police Directorate.

The European Commission has given approval for the construction of nearly 33 km of the new "Europa" highway in the section connecting the Kalotina checkpoint on the border with Serbia and the ring road of Sofia.
