Uninsured vehicles law under consultation

Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Harry Theoharis stressed on Monday that under a new bill the government will address the issue of uninsured and immobilized vehicles.

In an interview on Skai TV, Theoharis stressed that "having citizens divided into two categories, with some paying road taxes regularly and others not, is unacceptable."

Cross-checking unit emerging

Sales of real estate with cash, undeclared incomes in Greece and abroad, taxpayers who appear with annual incomes that do not exceed 10,000 euros, or larger amounts but with disproportionate expenses, as well as those who obtain income from short-term leases, are being targeted by the tax collection mechanism in 2024.

A fraction of tax fines get paid

Extra tax and fines amounting to almost 1.955 billion euros were attributed by the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) in 2023 to taxpayers and businesses after audits they carried out, even finding extensive tax evasion in some cases. Of this amount, however, only €305.7 million, or 15.6% of those certified, flowed into the state coffers.

Property transaction probe is starting

The first of the two new Capital Taxation Centers (KEFOK), which undertakes to ensure the effective taxation and control of real estate, is to be activated on Monday. Their monitoring is leaving the local tax offices and all orders to them will be given centrally.

In the past, there were many cases of different interpretations, as well as glaring cases of mistakes by tax officials.

Faster issue of tax clearance

The procedures for issuing tax information will be faster as the interoperability between the state agencies is adopted. The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) will be immediately informed about the existence of non-overdue debts of the citizen and accordingly grant the tax clearance certificate, or not.
