The delegates attending the Extraordinary Congress of the National Liberal Party (PNL) on Friday approved amendments to the Statutes of the party, with 6 votes against and 8 abstentions.

Under the new rules, the PNL leader and the 31 vice presidents will be elected under a single-vote system at the party's congress. The powers of deputy chairs will be decided by the National Political Bureau and approved by the Standing Delegation.

In addition, according to the new statutes, the secretary general of the party will be nominated by the PNL chairman and validated by the National Political Bureau, with the rightful members including the branch leaders, leaders and deputy leaders of parliamentary groups, municipal mayors, chairs of county councils and the leader of the party's MEPs delegation.

The delegates decided to remove from the statutes the provision according to which PNL is a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) and the Liberal International. PNL's affiliation to a European political group will be decided in its ordinary congress.

According to the new statutes of PNL, the name, identity, historic tradition and unity are immutable values of the party, this proposal coming from the Liberals' honorary chairman Mircea-Ionescu Quintus. AGERPRES
