“If Elgin”: An older, meaningful campaign about the Parthenon marbles

The image of the Parthenon in Athens is recognizable on a global scale.  Both Greeks and foreigners remember the Acropolis after it was destroyed and plundered. Even though wounded by eons of abuse by foreigners, the Parthenon still stands tall.

 

Lord Elgin, antiquities thief managed to hurt the Parthenon even more than it already was. The subject of the Parthenon marbles’ return to Athens is an ever-present issue of vast diplomatic and international significance. Amongst the government-led attempts to bring the marbles back stand various privately-initiated campaigns for their return, sensational in their message and awash with meaning.

 

One of which took place back in 2012 by Alexis Mantheakis and Aris Kalogeropoulos.

 

“If Elgin” shows what would have happened if the so-called Lord had “paid a visit” to other cities in the same way that he visited Athens.
