Roglič injured in nasty fall at La Vuelta

Seville – The Slovenian three-time defending champion Primož Roglič had a nasty fall in the final meters of the 16th stage of La Vuelta on Tuesday. Remounting his bike, he crossed the finish line covered in blood and bruises.

The 32-year-old Jumbo Visma rider made a determined push to attack on the last minor climb only a few kilometres to the finish, but then crashed in the final sprint for the stage win.

Dane Mads Pedersen, who rides for Trek-Segafredo, won the stage for his second stage victory at this year’s tour of Spain, while Roglič came in 35th, although the sprinting rules mean he clocked the winner’s time.

In the sprint Roglič took the back position behind the sprinting specialists, but then hit against the bike of Briton Fred Wright (Bahrain-Victorious) and crashed to the ground. He finished the stage with a bloodied leg and arm, holding his shoulder and chest in pain.

It is not clear yet whether he will be able to continue with his attempt to win the race for the fourth time running. He is now 1.26 minutes behind the race leader Remco Evenepoel of Belgium (Quick-Step).
