Femicide and violence against women continues to be a grave problem in Türkiye, some 23 women fell victim to femicide in March, when International Women's Day was marked, reveals a report published by a women's association.

The worrying rise in juvenile criminality has alerted authorities, who have embarked on a campaign to collect data to analyze and, ultimately, tackle the phenomenon.

Family members of two people who died in the rail collision in Tempe testified before the investigating Larissa prosecutor on Monday.

Violence against women continues to be a grave problem in Türkiye, as the number of femicides rose from 348 in 2021 to 381 last year, which means at least one woman fell victim to femicide every day last year alone, shows the data from the Federation of Women's Associations of Türkiye (TKDF).

"Enough, enough," President Joe Biden exclaimed over and over as he delivered an impassioned address to the nation imploring Congress to take action against gun violence after mass shootings he said had turned schools, supermarkets and other everyday places into "killing fields."

21 are the victims of the shooting at a primary school in the United States, world agencies report. The information is about 19 children and two adults. The incident took place in the town of Uvalde, 160 kilometers from San Antonio in the state of Texas, said US Senator Roland Gutierrez.

The families of nine victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting announced Tuesday they have agreed to a $73 million settlement of a lawsuit against the maker of the rifle used to kill 20 first graders and six educators in 2012.

The population of prisons in Turkey has decreased by 8.5 percent to some 266,831 as of Dec. 31, 2020, compared to the same day of 2019, figures from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) show.  

"A total of 96 percent of the inmates are males, leaving with just 4 percent female prisoners," TÜİK said in a statement on Nov. 2.
