Palestinian, Syrian refugees in Lebanon camps brace for virus

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinian and Syrian refugees living in overcrowded and rundown camps in Lebanon are bracing for the novel coronavirus as aid groups mobilize to help.    

Lebanon is home to tens of thousands of Palestinians in camps that over the decades have become bustling neighborhoods and at least 1.5 million Syrians who have fled the war next door.    

New mother from Attica refugee camp tests positive for coronavirus

A new mother from a refugee camp in Ritsona, northeast of the Greek capital, tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the Migration Ministry said on Tuesday.

The woman was tested after being taken to an Athens hospital to give birth on Sunday. Her baby and its father have also been tested and were found to be free of the virus.

After Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said that Croatia was ready to take in some child refugees trapped in refugee camps on Greek islands, hostile comments on social networks condemned the idea, some claiming that parents and wider relatives would then accompany the children - some of whom might be extremists.

Protests in Greece over New Refugee Centers

Greek administrative officials and residents of the five Greek Aegean islands accommodating refugees and migrants have staged a protest in Athens against plans to build new camps.

Dozens of protesters from the islands of Lesbos, Chios, Samos Leros and Kos gathered in front of the interior ministry, carrying placards against projects for new refugee camps.

European Asylum Support Office bolsters presence in Greece

Alternate Minister for Migration Policy Giorgos Koumoutsakos and the executive director of the European Asylum Support Office (EASO), Nina Gregori, on Tuesday signed an agreement paving the way for the agency to acquire a branch in Greece as part of its efforts to bolster support for the country as it struggles to manage rising numbers of refugees and migrants.

Young migrant stabbed to death at Moria camp

A 20-year-old man from Yemen was stabbed to death on Thursday night during an altercation at the overcrowded Moria refugee camp on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos, police have confirmed.

The young man was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police have launched an investigation to find the culprit and have reportedly detained several people.
