Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Thursday evening said that if he were to be elected president in this week's presidential election, he would fully support a government made by the new Social Liberal Union (USL) [that would be an alliance of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Liberal Reformist Party (PLR)- e.n.] and headed by Calin Popescu Tariceanu.

'If I become president, I shall support a government made by USL and headed by Calin Popescu Tariceanu, with the Social Democrats, with all those who were voted in 2012 by the electors. First of all because I believe it is a good governance programme, that of the USL [the alliance existed before, with the National Liberal Party, of which PLR is a breakaway faction] which has paid good results so far and continues to do so, with economic performance, but also with social measures, and second of all because this is how Romanians voted in 2012. Romanians voted for a USL government,' Ponta said in a show on Antena 3 private television broadcaster.

He gave guarantees that, as president, he would have an exemplary collaboration with the prime minister, to the benefit of the country.

'We must restore USL, we must give people the confidence that they would be ruled by the people they voted for until 2016 and (...) you will finally see what it means a president who works with the government, who doesn't work against the government of the country,' Victor Ponta said. AGERPRES
