Ombudsman: Human rights situation cause for concern

BELGRADE - Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic submitted his regular annual report to the parliament, describing the human rights situation in Serbia in 2014 as concerning.

"The state of the rule of law and legal security, adherence to good governance principles, organization and capacities of the administration, and implementation of laws and above all- the economic situation were not up to the level required for the decent life of all," reads the Ombudsman's annual report filed to the parliament on Sunday.

Most complaints (44 percent) relate to the administration's overdue responses, negligent approach to duties, faulty implementation of laws and other omissions from the field of good governance, says the report.

Over the course of 2014, the ombudsman ascertained omissions in the work of public bodies that led to rights infringements in 833 cases, acting upon citizens' complaints or on his own initiative, and gave 799 recommendations to relevant bodies.
