Albania MPs Urged Not to 'Politicise' Threats to Prosecutor

Fatos Klosi, the former director of the Albanian intelligence service, SHISH, has called for a case relating to threats allegedly sent to the country's General Prosecutor, Adriatik Llalla, to be handled by Albania's security institutions and for it not to become politicised.

His request comes after two MPs from the ruling majority in Albania sought a hearing with Llalla regarding the information his family had been sent in the threats.

"If they are going to speak about why and how threats have happened and politicise the issue, then ... nothing good will come out of it," Klosi told BIRN.

On September 23, TV station Top Channel said the wife and children of the prosecutor had been sent outside the country over the summer after threats were made to Llalla's security and their own.

Quoting unnamed sources, Top Channel said the threats arrived after the prosecution started to investigate a criminal group.

The General Prosecutor's office released a statement on September 23, that did not deny the reports but which added that the institution "is continuing its normal activity in accordance with law, and there is no problem in continuing investigations".

No more official information on the issue has emerged, and is unclear what stage the investigation is at and whether the police or intelligence service, SHISH, are involved.

On Wednesday, meanwhile, two MPs from the ruling majority, Xhemal Qefalia and Arben Cuko, sought a hearing with General Prosecutor Llalla, the police chief, Haki Cako, and the director of SHISH, Visho Ajazi.
