Bosnians Show Sky's the Limit for Famous Cheese

Students from the Livno-based secondary vocational school, Silvije Strahimir Kranjcevic, will next week attach a piece of the region's famous salty white Livno cheese to a meteorological balloon and send it to a height of 35,000 metres.

The project, termed symbolically "Space Cheese", was thought up by Professor Bozo Peric who wanted to give his students a catchy way to turn scientific theory into practice.

"In my work I try to use both theory and practice. I give the students a problem and teach them to find a solution", Peric told BIRN on Friday.

Having followed previous attempts to send various objects into space, Peric was inspired to make the complex theories taught in his computer studies class more approachable.

Apart from marketing the area's most famous dairy product, the students will display their scientific know-how in front of a large auditorium.

"The students are doing the entire engineering part of the project," Peric said.

Measuring devices programmed by the students will monitor the cheese as it ascends into the skies, calculating its height, temperature and surrounding air pressure.

"The students will programme the means to measure the temperature, to determine the cheese's position, and will learn to use mobile and internet networks," the professor explained.

He confirmed that since starting the project the number of students interested in his class has drastically increased.

The launch of the Livno cheese is expected to take place on Wednesday. Peric told BIRN that depending on the weather conditions the cheese may even cross the border and land in Montenegro.

World Hope International backed the project with a 250-euro grant.

In 2013, two enthusiasts from Sarajevo launched Bosnia...
