Book honouring former President Milan Kučan

Ljubljana – A special book about Milan Kučan, Slovenia’s first president, has been released ahead of his 80th birthday that will be celebrated on Thursday. The publication features 85 impressions of Kučan, including eight by foreign figures.

The book, titled Prijatelj, Državnik, Človek (Friend, Statesman, Man) was published by Didakta, which said on the occasion that the book was a way to honour Kučan by releasing stories written by his friends and co-workers.

The content and form of the book was entirely left up to the selected designers and authors. A brief biography of the former president was penned by historian Božo Repe.

The book also contains photographs, amateur as well as professional, Didakta said, adding that a special edition was presented to Kučan this morning.

“About Milan, we think we know it all, but actually we know little,” philosopher and sociologist Spomenka Hribar, who will also turn 80 this month, said as reported by newspaper Delo. Despite him being a prominent figure, she believes there is little known about his achievements and actions during Slovenia’s independence efforts.

Kučan thanked all that have been involved in the project, adding he was curious about the book’s content.

The book has been released as part of a series of biographies and autobiographies that has already seen the releases of books honouring another Slovenian statesman France Bučar and former Vice-Chancellor of Germany Joschka Fischer.
