The members of the Romanian team that participated in the 48th edition of the International Chemistry Olympiad 'D.I. Mendeleev' organised by the Faculty of Chemistry 'M.V. Lomonosov" of the Moscow State University - Russian Federation, on Wednesday will receive awards from Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

The Romanian students conquered five gold medals, one silver and one bronze medal, and claimed the first position in the teams' rankings at the 48th edition of the 'D. Mendeleev' International Chemistry Olympiad held in Moscow over May 11-17.

While scoring the best result in the history of the country's participation in this competition, the Romanian team defeated the Russian Federation's team, that only conquered three gold medals out of the 10 at stake.

There were 105 students representing 16 countries participating in this year's edition of the Olympiad. The competition consisted of three tests to be completed in five hours, two of which were theoretical examinations and one practical experiment, all with a high degree of complexity.

The first theoretical examination included eight compulsory problems and the other one implied solving one problem (optionally chosen from a set of three) for each of the five sections included: physical chemistry, life sciences, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and analytical chemistry.
