Romanian intelligence services are among the highest performing within NATO and appreciated accordingly, Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean told news website DC News on Thursday.

'I can afford saying that publicly from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Romanian intelligence services are extremely performing, among the highest performing of the [NATO] Alliance, and they are appreciated accordingly. (...) We have all the possible means, and the connections, science and expertise allowing us being present, including on site, in a very productive way,' Corlatean said.

Asked whether Romania could have acted differently in foreign policy over the past 13 years, the minister pointed out there was no alternative to the euro-Atlantic guideline.

'We do not have other formulas, and will not have other formulas at least for many years from now. The Strategic Partnership with the United States is essential. Being European is essential to us, and one could not stand aside as regards military action or intelligence, either, where we are the highest performing — I maintain that,' the minister stressed.

He also commented assertions of President Traian Basescu about some presidential hopefuls being undercover intelligence officers.

'It was really entertaining to me seeing this. Particularly Mr. President Basescu raising the issue of undercover officers — but life's still beautiful in Romania,' Corlatean said. AGERPRES
