Trump calls 1915 killings of Armenians 'Meds Yeghern'

U.S. President Donald Trump called the 1915 killings of Armenians "Meds Yeghern," an Armenian term meaning "great calamity," avoiding the use of the word "genocide." 

Trump chose to opt for the wording in his first commemorative statement on April 24, just like his predecessor, Barack Obama.

"Today, we remember and honor the memory of those who suffered during the Meds Yeghern, one of the worst mass atrocities of the 20th century," Trump stated.

Turkey rejects that the events of 1915 amounted to "genocide," saying the killings should be understood in the context of World War I.
