Moldovan ambassador invited to consultations on the situation of Romanians denied entrance to Moldova

Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) is carefully and concernedly following the developments in the situation created at the border between Romania and Moldova and asking, "in the spirit of dialogue and co-operation that characterises the relationship between the two countries" for explanations on why Romanian citizens were not allowed to cross the border.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, MAE says that Moldova's ambassador in Bucharest was invited to consultations for additional clarifications.

"Also, through the Embassy of Romania in Chisinau, steps have been taken to ensure that Romanian citizens are respected their rights, as is normal in a state in an association agreement with the EU and a strategic partnership with Romania."

MAE announced earlier that the Moldovan Border Police decided on Monday to deny entry through the Albita customs of a group of Romanians who are part of the Union March on grounds that they "disrupted" public order.

According to an information sent by MAE on Tuesday to AGERPRES, from the point of view of the Romanian border authorities, the group of persons who showed up on the morning of August 27 at Albita did not in any way disrupt the orderor the public peace on the Romanian side, nor did they violate the legal regime of the state border.

"The Embassy of Romania in the Republic of Moldova has acted on account that a group of Romanian citizens who, on August 27, 2018, wanted to enter Moldova, as well as following the press statement released by the Border Police of the Republic of Moldova. According to the official information, the Romanian citizens, who are part of the Union March, were not allowed to cross the state border, being denied entry into the Republic of Moldova, the reason being the disruption of public order in the border area, the violation of the regime of border crossing points. We mention that this was a decision of the authorities of the Republic of Moldova, and the Embassy of Romania in Chisinau is attempting, in its dialogue with the Moldovan authorities, for the rights of Romanian citizens to be respected in accordance with the domestic regulations of this state and the international obligations incumbent on Moldova," said MAE.

The Action 2012 Unionist Platform sent AGERPRES on Monday a press statement saying that Moldova issued 35 entry bans on Romanian citizens participating in the Centennial March.
