World Bank Introduces New Country Manager For Bulgaria

The World Bank appoints Antony Thomspon as new country manager for Bulgaria, said the bank in a statement. 

"The recent appointment of a new World Bank Country Manager for Bulgaria is further illustration of the institutional commitment to work for ending poverty and promote shared prosperity in the country", the statement reads.

EU Payments May Restart In November

The European Commission expressed its willingness to restart payments on the European programmes as soon as possible, said the press office of Bulgaria's Government in a statement. 

This became clear at a meeting of Bulgaria's caretaker deputy PM Iliana Tsanova and  the European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn in Brussels. 

Kristalina Georgieva: Bulgaria's EU Funds Absorption Inefficient

It is the inefficient management of EU funds, and not money shortage, that poses the biggest challenge to Bulgaria, incoming Vice President for Budget and Human Resources Kristalina Georgieva said.

In an interview with the Bulgarian National Television she added among her main priorities was to help Bulgaria to absorb EUR 16 B in the 2014-2020 period.

Bulgargaz Demands Gas Price Hike

State-owned gas company Bulgargaz has proposed to Bulgaria's energy regulator DKEVR the price for 1000 cubic meters of gas go up 1.59%, or BGN 9.54.

The same amount of gas currently stands at BGN 661.23.

Bulgargaz's demand comes against the backdrop of a 2.73% decrease in gas prices over the second quarter of 2014.

Bulgaria Requests to Enter Germany's Group of NATO Framework Nations

Caretaker Defense Minister Velizar Shalamanov has sent a letter to German counterpart Ursula von der Leyen to voice Bulgaria's willingness to join NATO's concept of "framework nations".

The move was announced by the Defense Ministry's press office.

Sofia Municipality Sees Increase in Vehicle Tax Revenue

Sofia Municipality reported an increase of BGN 7M in revenue from motor vehicles taxes in 2014, compared to the previous year.

Revenues for the first nine months of 2014 are nearly BGN 347M, which is 65% of the annual plan. Implementation is 21% higher compared to the same period last year, Deputy Mayor for Finance Doncho Barbalov told Bulgaria's National Radio.

Sofia Court Delays Ruling on Anti-Putin Activist’s Extradition

Sofia City Court on Wednesday postponed until October 21 its decision on Russia's request for the extradition of anti-Putin activist Nikolai Kobliakov.

Until then Kobliakov will remain in Bulgaria. The court denied the request of Kobliakov's lawyers to grant him permission to temporarily leave the country on assignments relating to his projects.

Bulgarian Authorities to Mull Tsvetan Vasilev’s Extradition, PM Says

Bulgarian authorities will discuss the possibility of seeking the extradition of KTB majority owner Tsvetan Vasilev from Serbia, caretaker PM Georgi Bliznashki said on Wednesday.

His comment was prompted by a statement by Vasilev's lawyer that his client was in Serbia's capital Belgrade and was working on a recovery plan for  the troubled bank.
