Book outlines steps to fight workplace violence against women

Turkey's top business organization has outlined the steps which need to be taken by workplaces to fight violence against women in a book.

The book stressed that violence against women still posed a major problem both in Turkey and abroad, regardless of "excuses" people have often pointed to such as low education and income levels.

ISIL attacks Iraq base, four Turkish soldiers wounded

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) carried out an attack against a Sunni military camp in the Bashiqa region of northern Iraq, wounding four Turkish soldiers. 

Two Peshmerga soldiers were also reportedly killed. 

12 ISIL militants en-route to Syria detained in Turkey

A total of 12 suspected Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants have been detained in Turkey while preparing to cross the border into Syria.

Eight militants, including seven foreign nationals, were detained in southeastern Gaziantep province, which shares a border with war-torn Syria, Do?an News Agency reported. 

Turkish markets' eyes on Fed rate decision

All eyes in the Turkish markets have been on the rate decision of the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) this week. Eight years after a devastating recession opened an era of loose U.S. monetary policy, the Fed was expected to raise rates late Dec. 16 for the first time since 2006, a sign the world's largest economy had overcome most of the wounds sustained in the global financial crisis.

12 mln Turkish people internally migrate in five years

More than 12 million people moved from one Turkish city to another between 2009 and 2014, according to data compiled by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TÜ?K), while a separate report defined Istanbul as a megacity with a population that could swell to 17 million by 2030. 

Number of jailed journalists in Turkey 'dramatically increases' in 2015: CPJ report

The number of journalists jailed in Turkey has dramatically risen in 2015, according to a special report by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). 

The report noted that 199 journalists were imprisoned worldwide in 2015, with China and Egypt ranking as the world's first and second worst jailers of journalists.

Turkey: 217 cases of foot-and-mouth disease detected

There have been 217 cases in a new foot-and-mouth disease outbreak since Sept. 29, Faruk Çelik, minister for food, agriculture and livestock said on Dec. 16.

Speaking at a press conference, Çelik said 117 of these outbreaks are under control while 100 others are still active.

Turkey 'top destination for hair transplant surgery'

Turkey ranks the world's first for the number of hair transplant operations carried out, amid rapidly rising demand from Arab citizens from Gulf countries.

A senior official from the Health Ministry, Ömer Tontu?, said over 200 hair transplant operations were carried out daily in Turkey, mainly on foreign patients. 

Trespassers shoot vertigo-inducing footage from top of mall in Istanbul

Two men who recently made headlines after shooting footage from atop the under-construction third bridge over Istanbul's Bosphorus, have now climbed to the top of the Akasya shopping mall and taken selfies. 

Pavel Smirnov and Haluk Yavuz climbed the top of the mall on Istanbul's Asian side and released another video, as well as photos. 

Amnesty accuses Turkey of abusing, forcibly deporting refugees

Turkish authorities have since September been detaining scores of refugees, including from Iraq and Syria, and abusing and pressuring them to return home in breach of international law, Amnesty International said Dec. 16.

Local company to open Turkey's first humanoid robot facility

Local software development company Ak?nsoft has said it will establish Turkey's first humanoid robot manufacturing facility in the Central Anatolian province of Konya. 

The company has produced three humanoid models dubbed "Ak?nc?," or "Raider" in English, and three advanced humanoid models dubbed "Ada," or "Island" in English, which can serve as waiters. 

Turkey, eight EU countries to meet to discuss Syrian refugees

Turkey and eight EU countries as well as the EU Commission will come together to discuss the Syrian refugee issue at a meeting on Dec. 17 in Brussels, where Ankara hopes to learn the number of refugees these countries will receive in the coming year. 

Two men linked to Paris attackers arrested in Austria: Report

Two men who entered Europe with members of the group that carried out the deadly Paris attacks have been arrested in the Austrian city of Salzburg, posing as refugees, Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung reported on Dec. 16.

The two Frenchmen, of Algerian and Pakistani origin, are being questioned by French and Austrian authorities, the newspaper reported.
