"Vuk Karadzic - Life and Work" exhibition opens on Friday

BELGRADE - The exhibition titled "Vuk Karadzic - Life and Work” will open on Friday, February 28, at the Museum of Vuk and Dositej in Belgrade.

The exhibition will mark 65 years since the Museum of Vuk and Dositej was founded by a decree of the Serbian government, and considering that this year also marks 150 years since the death of Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic, the museum decided to celebrate its anniversary with an exhibition dedicated to the major reformer of the Serbian language.

The visitors will have an opportunity to see exhibits from Vuk's legacy, most of which have never been put on display before, as well as two lesser-known portraits, the National Museum announced.

The Museum of Vuk, or, more precisely, the Memorial Room of Vuk, was part of the former National Museum as well, and it was further expanded in 1949 with a display dedicated to Dositej Obradovic as Vuk's predecessor in the endeavor to introduce the popular Serbian language into literature.

The edifice hosting the Museum today is a typical example of Turkish urban residential architecture. In the time of the First Serbian Uprising, between 1809 and 1813, the building functioned as the Higher School, the first higher education institution in Serbia that later developed into a University.

The Museum is dedicated to Dositej Obradovic as one of the founders and Vuk Karadzic as one of the first twenty students of the Higher School. Due to its historic and architectural value, the edifice has been named a cultural and historical monument of extraordinary significance.

The author of "Vuk Karadzic - Life and Work" is the museum consultant Ljiljana Cubric, and the exhibition will be open through June 1.
