Dacic supports changes among top police officials

BELGRADE - Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said on Monday he supported the decision to dismiss a number of top police officials, adding that it should have happened a lot sooner, but that he had been unable to do it while serving as the interior minister, because there had been no political will to go through with it within the government at the time.

"There was no political will for such a thing in previous years. I was the interior minister, but those who ran other bodies, the bureau for the coordination of security agencies and the national security council, during the government led by Mirko Cvetkovic insisted on keeping the police leadership as it was," he stated.

Dacic met with New Zealand's Foreign Minister Murray McCully and told reporters afterwards he supported the authorities' decision to remove some high-ranking police officials.

"I support the decision by Minister Stefanovic, the prime minister and the president. Things should be brought in line," Dacic noted.
