DefMin: Romania military bases compatible with NATO states' infrastructure, hardware

National Defence Minister Mircea Dusa said in this central Romanian city on Monday that the Romanian military bases are compatible with the infrastructure and hardware equipping NATO member states, but he would not cite those bases that will host the alliance aircraft aimed for air police.

'Our military bases, be they the bases of the Air Forces, of the Land Forces or the Naval Forces are already compatible with the infrastructure and hardware equipping NATO member states', Dusa stressed.

When asked where in particular will the air bases to host NATO air-police aircraft be located, the minister answered the reporters they will learn 'at the right time'.

Dusa announced the airport at Fetesti (southeastern Romania) is being upgraded, with the investment totaling more than 31 million euros, with 10 million euros of it being contributed by the defence ministry budget. He insisted, however, the example he gave did not mean he was speaking of the location of such a base.

The presence of NATO members' fighter jets on the Romanian territory was one of the topics discussed at the Romanian Supreme Defence Council meeting on Sept. 4.

'The aircraft will be stationed by rotation and is part of NATO integrated defence system; alongside the Romanian Aviation they will provide air police, which means that beyond such fighter jets there can also be stationed in Romanian 200 military, pilots, mechanics, aircraft maintenance staff', Romanian President Traian Basescu had explained at that time.AGERPRES
