Handelsblatt: Kyriakos Mitsotakis challenges Tsipras’ domination

A year has passed since SYRIZA won the elections and Alexis Tsipras still dominates the Greek political landscape despite his false campaign promises and the austerity measures imposed, says German newspaper Handelsblatt.

“But, now his domination is challenged. The 47-year-old president, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, promises to practice a tougher opposition. The Harvard-educated and former banker has excellent international connections, talks three languages fluently and is able to promote himself as a credible alternative not only to Greek voters, but also to Greece’s creditors” says the newspaper adding that Alexis Tsipras is now under pressure and it is still unknown how he will react to the new challenge.

The newspaper also said that Mr. Tsipras could turn to new, early elections before the new leader of main opposition is able to stand firmly on his feet. This approach would fit to his way of thinking. But, as it is mentioned in the article, Alexis Tsipras should be aware of that fact that another election campaign would leave open the possibility of a Grexit.
