Historic synagogue in Edirne hosts concert

The historic synagogue in Turkey's northwestern city of Edirne hosted a concert featuring pieces from Jewish composers on Oct. 18.

Turkey's Jewish community leader Silviyo Ovedya addressed the audience before the concert, saying they had come to Edirne in honor of the European Day of Jewish Culture, which is usually marked in Istanbul. 

Int'l press freedom coalition to visit Turkey ahead of election

Concern over the deteriorating state of press freedom in Turkey and its impact on the upcoming Nov. 1 parliamentary elections have prompted a coalition of international free expression groups to undertake an emergency press freedom mission to the country next week, the International Press Institute (IPI) announced over the weekend.

Crime and Punishment Film Fest in Istanbul

The 5th International Crime and Punishment Film Festival kicked off Oct. 15 at a ceremony in Istanbul's Cemal Re?it Rey Concert Hall. 

Head of the festival Professor Adem Sözüer said the festival handled a universal problem through the perspective of justice every year. He said this year's theme was "Discrimination." 

Veteran director Memduh Ün dies at 95

Decorated Turkish cinema director Memduh Ün has died at a hospital in Bodrum following a long period of treatment. He was 95. 

Ün, who lived with his partner, well-known actress Fatma Girik, in the Torba neighborhood, was taken to Ac?badem Hospital last year on Nov. 11 for treatment and had remained in the intensive care unit since then.  

'Homeland' trolled by Arab grafitti artists hired for set

The latest episode of TV series Homeland has been trolled by a group of graffiti artists employed by its producers, who covered the walls with Arabic slogans mocking the show for its simplistic depiction of Arabs and Islamic beliefs.

Children to sing for peace in Istanbul

The Music for Peace Foundation, which aims at providing musical education for as many children as possible and removing handicaps from participating in the arts, will celebrate its decennial this year. The foundation, which has so far changed the lives of nearly 5,000 children with the power of music, will celebrate its anniversary with a special concert on Nov. 15 at Zorlu PSM. 

Prominent Turkish actor dies of liver cancer

Renowned Turkish actor Levent K?rca died of liver cancer early on Oct. 12 in Istanbul. He was 67. 

K?rca had been undergoing treatment for liver cancer at Marmara University's Pendik Training and Research Hospital since July.

Belgrade Jazz Festival to take place from Oct 28 to Nov 1

This year's Belgrade Jazz Festival, 31st in a row, will be held in the Serbian capital from October 28 to November 1.

The festival will feature performances by artists from the United States, Japan, Turkey, Sweden, Norway, Puerto Rico and other corners of the globe.

Ankara to host world flamenco dancers at festival

The 9th Ankara Flamenco Festival will be organized from Oct. 10 to 17 in Turkey's capital. Organized by the Ankara Flamenco Association in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy Cultural Attaché, the festival will host world leading flamenco guitar virtuosos and dancers.  

Turkey eyes TV series exports worth $350 mln

Turkey plans to realize popular TV series exports worth $350 million this year, according to sector representatives attending the world's leading TV content fair MIPCOM Cannes on Oct. 5-8.  

Turkey, selected the country of honor at this year's fair, has risen from an average of $500 to around $200,000 per episode in TV series exports over the last decade. 

Theater actress dies aged 68

Theater, cinema and TV drama actress Tomris ?ncer died on Oct. 5 at an Istanbul hospital, where she had been receiving cancer treatment for some time. She was 68. 

A funeral ceremony for the actress will be held today in the Eski Foça cemetery in ?zmir.
